Challenge FAQs

Who is eligible to enter?

-  The focus is on mobile and web startups but if you have a great desktop internet application or some other nice fusion of offline and online, you’re most welcome.

-  The challenge is open to individuals or group of individuals residing in Zimbabwe. All winners will be asked to verify this before being awarded prizes.

-  All team members (a maximum of 3) need to be listed when you submit your entry to startups@barcamp.co.zw

-  The application of the start-up needs to be new. If it’s already on the market it needs to have been made available to the public on a date later than 31 December 2010.

What will judges look for in an application?

The following Judging criteria will be used:

-  Originality of Concept,

-  Polish and Appeal,

-  Indispensability

-  Relevance to market

-  Team’s skills and background

What will happen on the day? What will I be expected to present?

Participants entering the challenge will be expected to pitch anything from an application concept to fully functional application. Of course the more developed and functional an application is, the more chances the startup will get of winning.

The first round of presentations at BarCamp will be a 5 minute elevator pitch to a panel of judges. About 10 startups are expected to come out of this round. The second round will be held on the same day and participant will have 10 minutes to pitch to a panel of judges and take questions for another 5 minutes. Participants can make use of slideshows, prototypes, a model or a live product to present demo their application. A live functional product is an added advantage but not a requirement to get through to the finals. However, a working prototype will be required in the Final round.
